Golden Jubilee Mass in Rakhiv
Father Béla Bohán is celebrating his golden jubilee mass, the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordinartion this month. Father Béla came to Subcarpathia to serve as a missionary in 1989 from the Archdiocese of Eger in Hungary. He first served in Rakhiv and its vicinity, where he spent nearly one and a half years before assigned to be the parish priest in Uzhgorod.
Father László Mikulyák, current parish priest in Rakhiv along with the faithful invited the jubilarian on the feast day of the Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul to celebrate his golden jubilee mass in the church of Rakhiv.
In his introductory words, Father László remembered how important it was for the Rakhiv Catholic community to get a pastor from the Motherland after so many years of Soviet oppression. He then introduced those faithful who were prepared for the first communion by Father Béla 20 years ago. They came to the celebration with their children.
In his homily, Father Béla shared his memories on how he arrived to our region, what the situation here was at the time, and how warm a welcome he received from the faithful. Following the communion, Sándor Tuser vice president of the committee of representatives greeted the jubilarian, recalling how Father Béla said 21 years ago that there would be Hungarian education and a Hungarian school in Rakhiv again. And so it happened - his words came true. Nowadays, it is not only the church where people can speak Hungarian in public. The community has also had a Hungarian school for almost 15 years now. He concluded his greeting with wishing good health to the jubilarian as well as asking for God's blessing on him. Father Béla was greeted by his former Bible students and then Father Mikulyak presented him a memory plate for his anniversary.
After the mass, there was a string quartet concert, jointly organized by the church and the town.

Church Feast and Golden Jubilee Mass in Jasinya
The faithful of Jasinya enjoyed a fine weather on June 29, the feast day of Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul. That day was a dual feast for the parish community as they celebrated the feast day of their church as well as the golden jubilee mass of Father Béla Bohán SJ, now parish priest of Bereghovo, who used to serve the Jasinya parish two decades ago.
Young and old dressed up nicely and headed towards the church, which was decorated with pine branches and red cover all over inside, a symbol of martyrdom. Apart from the faithful of Jasinya, pilgrims from Rakhiv, Zipserei, Bohdan, Svidovec, and other places arrived to the celebration. Amid bell ringing and organ music the clergy and the assistance entered the church. At the beginning of the mass Father László Mikulyák greeted his fellow priest and asked him to bless the new altar painting before beginning the mass. The painting was finished a few days before the feast day.
In his homily, Father Béla pointed out the important role of Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul in the establishment of the Church as well as in the life of the Ancient Church. Their martyrdom made them become the obelisks of Truth, real oil branches, and shining stars.
The faithful brought the offerings - bread and wine - to the altar in a procession. The communion was followed by a solemn procession. Finally, the Te Deum, i.e. the thanksgiving anthem was sang.
The poem "Te Deum" by Sándor Sík was recited and then István Schweiger, head of the church council congratulated the celebrant on the golden jubilee anniversary on behalf of the Jasinya parish community. After that, Miklós Szentimrei sang asking for God's blessing. One of the most moving moments was when the now adult and married "children" who were prepared for the first communion by Father Béla 20 years ago came up to the altar; they were the first ones to receive their first communion publicly after several years of Soviet oppression.
Following the Papal hymn and the Hungarian national anthem, Father Béla gave his golden jubilee blessing on everybody. Finally, members of the Jasinya community hosted the agape in the church yard for all the pilgrims.

Institution of Lectors
Bishop Antal Majnek instituted 13 men as lectors at the cathedral of Mukachevo. The new lectors come from all over the diocese. One does not need any specific permission to read the Scripture for a mass; women can serve as readers as well - explained the bishop. The ceremonious invitation of men to be lectors aims at showing appreciation to those who read the Word of God nicely and clearly at masses; it also aims at encouraging other men as well to volunteer for this nice duty.
The short ceremony of instituting the lectors took place between the Gospel and the homily. The candidates lined up in front of the altar and Bishop Majnek gave each one of them the Bible while saying these words: "Take the Bible and spread the Word of God faithfully so that it becomes life in people's hearts."
Ordination of Priest in Mukachevo
Bishop Antal Majnek ordained deacon Sándor Mankovics a priest at the cathedral of Mukachevo at the 9.30 a.m. mass on June 19th. At the beginning of the mass the bishop solemnly marked the end of the Year for Priests and asked the faithful to continue praying for their pastors.
In his homily, the bishop talked about how vocation for priesthood starts deep in the heart silently, how one can remain loyal to it even in times of hardships by always returning to the first love for Jesus to whom the priest once committed himself blissfully. The bishop emphasized the real, living relationship with Jesus and the constant dialog with Him as the basis of priesthood as well as persistence in it. Only this way a priest can recreate, recover and refresh others as well. The effort we make is essential; however, mercy comes first and is the most important.
Faithful form all over the diocese came to attend the ordination ceremony: from Uzhgorod, hometown of the newly ordained priest, from Uzhgorod's vicinity as well as from Rakhiv and Jasinya where Father Mankovics used to serve as a deacon. Also, priests from the diocese who serve the Hungarian communities in the region all celebrated together and took part in the ordination.
Father Sándor Mankovics celebrated his first mass at 5 p.m. on June 20th at St. George parish church in Uzhgorod.
Church of Chepa Renewed
The parish of Chepa celebrated its church feast on June 13th, the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua. At the beginning of the mass, Jónás Bán OFM, parish priest in Chepa asked Bishop Antal Majnek to bless the newly renovated church interior, which was crowded with people that day, faithful from Chepa as well as pilgrims from nearby places.
The mass was concluded by a procession of the Eucharist, and by a Franciscan tradition, i.e. the blessing of flowers and the children. Finally, the bishop blessed the renovated cellar as well, which is going to be used for Bible studies.
Then the faithful in Chepa invited all the pilgrims for an agape offering them sandwiches and pastry.
The church of Chepa was converted into a church from a kindergarten. The state returned the building to the Catholic Church in 1996. Now it needed to be renovated again and the cellar to be fixed. Other denominations from the village also contributed to the church renovation expenses. Donations also came from the Bishop's Office in Munkachevo as well as the Foundation for Transcarpathia's Spiritual Life.

Church Feast in Bene
We celebrated the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Bene on June 11. It was a double joy for us as our church got blessed again on the feast day. With the help of God, the Church and all the benevolent supporters we have completed the renovation of the church after several years.
A multitude of people attended the event. The mass was celebrated by Bishop Antal Majnek along with several priests from our diocese. The Bishop in his sermon emphasized Christ's love for people: Jesus suffered for us to deliver us from our sins. We should always keep in mind that He is with us in hard times The Bishop urged us to respect the Sacred Heart of Jesus so that we become apostles of the Gospel. The mass was concluded by a procession.
Pilgrims from Bereghovo, Brozhava, Velyka Bihan, Mukachevo and from the Vinhradiv District arrived by buses. We gave a warm welcome to them at the agape that traditionally follows the mass. Among our guests was Bishop Antal Majnek, priests from our diocese, Mr. and Mrs. Scherczer from the Hungarian Consulate in Bereghovo, Sándor Orbán
Protestant minister, Mr. András Szuhán, mayor of Bene, members of the village council, as well as seniors from our village.
The event of a church feast does not only remind us of the smell of ginger bread, the taste of lollypop, but it also refreshes memories of things that we are liable to ignore: the church is home for God, and we are God's children, therefore the church is our refuge, it is always there for us, its doors are open to everyone. This is what we really celebrate at the church feast and we give thanks to God for having a place where we can go and we can praise Him for His gifts of mercy.

Blessing of children on the feast day of Saint Anthony
It is primarily a Franciscan tradition to bless flowers (lilies) and children on St. Anthony of Padua's feast day but it has lately been observed by others as well who particularly respect him. We connected this liturgy with the Te Deum and gave thanks for the past school year and for all the knowledge, wisdom, and kindness that our children have acquired throughout this year. Following the communion prayer, toddlers and little children, even babies carried by their parents came to the alter bringing white flowers, a symbol of their chastity. Father László blessed the flowers and then asked for God's blessings on all the children. He put his hands upon their head and blessed them one by one with these words: May the Lord Jesus bless you!
The Relics of St. Therese of Lisieux in the Diocese of Munkács
The relics of St. Therese of Lisieux were on pilgrimage in the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Ukraine for two months. First it was welcomed in the Archdiocese of L'viv on April 5. The Ukrainian pilgrimage ends in the Diocese of Munkács where the relics have been brought by the Carmelite priests. The faithful can greet one of the greatest saints of the Carmelite order on the itinerary of Rakhiv-Khust-Mukachevo-Uzhgorod-Seredne-Frideshovo. In Mukachevo, the relics were welcomed on June 4th at 5 p.m. by Bishop Antal Majnek, István Pogány, parish priest of Mukachevo, Vicar General P. Peter Zharkovski, and a multitude of faithful.
March for Life in Mukachevo - Ecumenical Protest Against Abortions
The Pro-life Movement in our Diocese - initiated by Bishop Antal Majnek - began two years ago. The first activists - Hungarians and Ukrainians - used to get together to pray; later on they started various activities such as lecturing at schools and for various communities, printing flyers, promote on giant posters the dignity of life and the human nature of the fetus, operating phone lines for mothers in crisis, and organizing retreats for post-abortion women.
Although there have been significant improvements made among the faithful, ignorance is still overwhelming concerning abortion in general (according to reliable medical statistics nearly 90% of women have had abortion); therefore there is a great need for the propagation of general knowledge on the issue.
Their first major campaign took place on June 1st when there was a March for Life to promote the protection of life and to call attention to the tragedy of abortion. Bishops, pastors and faithful of all denominations took part in the campaign.
At the beginning of the demonstration each denomination held a prayer at their own church for unborn babies, and then the communities met in front of the City Hall to head out towards the gynecological clinic. The mayor of Mukachevo also joined the procession. The organizers of the demonstration handed over a plastic copy of a 10-weeek-old fetus, which apparently shocked him.
The procession marched across the town. Participants carried candles, balloons, Hungarian and Ukrainian banners, and photos of fetuses. Although it started to rain in the meantime, the nearly 300 demonstrators persisted. People in the streets readily took the flyers handed out by marching adults and children. Two people were reading out (given) names; members of the Alpha Alliance from Hungary rang the bell after each name.
In front of the hospital, heads of all churches as well as the city mayor spoke for the protection of life and against the sin of abortion. Following the speeches, they planted the Tree of Life together. The demonstration was concluded by singing and praying together as well as releasing balloons with pro-life logos on them.
The demonstration got a positive feedback and was reported on by M Studio, the TV channel of Mukachevo, several times.
Collection Drive on June 20th for the Victims of Flood
Bishop Antal Majnek announced a collection drive on June 20th in the Diocese of Munkacs for the benefit of the victims of flooding in Hungary.
The following announcment was read in all of our churches on June 13th:
Heavy rains from the beginning of May caused tremendous losses in several regions of Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. Rivers, creeks, and inland waters flooded many towns and villages, some of which had been isolated by flood for days. In Northern Hungary tonws along the Sajó, the Hernád and the Bódva rivers suffered major flooding. More than 4700 families needed to be moved out and homes of several hundred families collapsed.
To ease the effetcs of flood damages united efforts need to be made. We should not forget how much help we got in times of the two major flooding in Transcarpathia. In return, we are organizing a collection drive in our diocese to help victims of the current flood.
We ask the faithful to contribute generously so that together we can help a lot of families rebuild their homes.

Diamond Wedding Anniversary in Rakhiv
 |
Father László Mikulyák with Sándor Pachir and Mária Lenke Petróczi
|
As a priest, I seldom have the opportunity to meet couples who have lived in a loving and faithful marriage for over half a century. Therefore it is a great pleasure to be part of the celebration of a diamond wedding, the 60th anniversary of a marriage.
On the last Sunday of May in the Roman Catholic parish church of Rakhiv Sándor Pachir és Mária Lenke Petróczi celebrated the anniversary of their marriage in the same church 60 years ago. They came to the altar again to renew their marriage vows that they have kept faithfully for six decades. They repeated the words of the marriage vow with their hands bound together with the stole. God will surely renew His blessings on their marriage. We presented the couple with a Renewal of Marriage Vows Certificate, a memory plate and flowers. The faithful in the church applauded them and shared in their joy.
The couple celebrating their jubilee said the following prayer:
Almighty and merciful God! Our lives are in your hands. You kept us true to the sacrament of marriage for 60 years. Increase and multiply upon us your mercy, protect us and let us praise Your name for ever and ever. Amen.
God bless you Lenke and Sándor, and may He grant you many happy returns!

Parish picnic in Rakhiv on May Day
May 1st this year was a great day at the Roman Catholic parish in Rakhiv. The very first May Day picnic, initiated by Rev. László Mikulyák, was organized for the community. Some 70 people attended the event out of which about 40 were kids.
As the event was held on Saturday right before Mother's Day, each one of the kids (aged 5-17) made a bouquet of paper flowers for their mothers and grandmothers; the flowers were placed in front of the altar.
The feast took place in the parish yard. They had wonderful weather for it. The grown ups had dance, various contests followed by delicious shashlik, ash-baked potatoes, and goulash. The cooks of the day were Mr. Ivan Zan, head of the church council, and his wife, Marika.
Men decorated and set up traditional maypoles. There was dancing and lots of fun for the rest of the day. Many thanks to those who took the time to come and celebarte; to those who organized it; to the cooks; and to Father László for the idea of the Mayday parish celebration in Rakhiv.
I hope that even more people can celebrate with us next year and that other parishes will follow our example of the Mayday celebration as well.
Ildikó Reparuk religious education teacher
A guest of ours from Hungary commented on our Mayday celebration:
"Let me congratulate you on the terrific May Day event. I was observing you as an outsider and took lots of pictures. (...) The food was excellent, and the company was great. Not for a moment did I have the feeling that we are strangers to each other. Men and women, elderly and young equally enjoyed the party.
I took my memories home with me to Szombathely and share them joyfully with the people at home. I wish all of you the best. May you continue having much success with 'team building'.
Regards, Kati
Opening of the "Light and Joy" Candle-Making Workshop in Transcarpathia
On 25 March 2010, Feast of the Annunciation, St. John of Nepomuk Church organized the next feast of the Jubilee Year to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Rakhiv Parish. Upon this occasion, the parish community invited Msgr. Mieczysław Mokrzycki Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv to our town.
Prior to the mass, Jevhenij Versler mayor of Rakhiv greeted the archbishop emphasising that his visit to the town demonstrates how the Church counts on the parish community in Rakhiv, which has been fullfilling its mission with undiminshed enthusiasm in the geographical center of Europe for 200 years now. Following a prayer for the archbisop, the holy mass was celebrated in Ukrainian and Hungarian. In his preaching to the faithful, Archbishop Mieczysław pointed out that this parish community, the center of which is the house of God, is very important and much needed. Very often we meet people who say that a church is not necessary for us to talk with God; it is actually better to pray to God outdoors in a natural environment, in a forest, or by a lake. "However, you, dear Brothers and Sisters, come here, to your church if you want to meet with God.
Because the church plays a special role in our life. It is hard to imagine a true, normal, well-bred person without home and family, just like it is hard to have religious upbringing and faith-based improvement without God and a church community. My dears, you want to bless the memorial for 'the unborn babies'. This is an indication of your love and devotion to God. Through this, you express your responsibility and care for the defenseless children as well as your objection to killing the innocent ones."
Following the Apostole's Creed and the Prayer of the Faithful, the gifts required for the mass were brought up to the altar in a procession. After the communion prayer, parish priest Rev. László Mikulyák asked the Archbishop to bless those pregnant mothers from the parish community who were there attending the ceremony, and who want to welcome the fruit of their womb as a gift of the Lord. Following the blessing and the imposition of hands, the mothers received a memorial card from the Metropolitan.
The closing blessing of the mass and the Pontifical Anthem was followed by the blessing of the memorial's carved statue for 'the unborn babies'. Due to this year's long winter the memorial park's assigned site in the church yard could not be finished therefore the statute is going to be placed there later on. The statue itself, a mother weeping over her aborted fetus, was donated to the Rakhiv Parish by the Order of Culture. The first speaker to address the attendees was Knight President Ferenc Nick followed by statue carver Ornik Srecka from Slovakia. After the inauguartion of the statue a prayer was told for the unborn babies and those women who commited abortion. Then the Metropolitan Archbishop blessed the statue.
At the end of the liturgy, leaders of the parish thanked the Archbishop for his visit and greeted him on his approaching birthday; they presented him a painting of the Rakhiv church. The Archbishop promised to keep the faithful and inhabitants of the town in his prayers, and gave a white chasuable as a gift to the 185-year-old church community.

Outdoor Way of the Cross in Holmci
The outdoor way of the cross was organized for the seventh time in Holmci on Saturday before Palm Sunday. Despite the cloudy weather about 500 people gathered to proceed across the village and up the hill while contemplating on the crucifixion of Jesus that redeemed us.
Short meditations on each station of the cross followed by songs facilitated the contemplation. As usual, the heavy wooden cross could be carried by anyone; many took part in carrying it; others helped each other to proceed. This way we got very close to the suffering that Jesus undertook for us, i.e. to the mystery of redemption.
The way of the cross was followed by a mass at the cemetery celebrated by Rev. Antal Michels, parish priest of Mukachevo-Palanok and Rev. Róbert Pohareczky who serves the community in Holmci. Five priests were there to hear confessions because a lot of the faithful like to make their Easter confession at this event. Rain poured down on the attendees during the mass; however, everybody endured it until the end. The way of the cross, like in previous years, proved to be a beautifully profound preparation for Holy Week.
Lord and Companion of Our Life
It was not long ago that we celebrated the birth of Jesus and here we already got to our most significant holiday, to the culmination of Jesus' act of redemption: his suffering, death and glorious resurrection. However, we should keep in mind that he spent most of his life in Nazareth, where he grew up and worked. In the meantime he realized how many people suffer around him: the sick, the deceived, the oppressed, the underprivileged, the orphans and the widows. He also saw that the leaders of the world only think of themselves in their egoism, cruelly exploiting and oppressing people. His sympathy for those suffering developed that early along with the holy desire to console them and help everybody. Gradually, he realized that there is too much to do, that the problem lies deeper down, that the fatal poison of sin contaminated everybody, and that there is not a single good person left. A radical solution was needed: to realize the Father's perfect plan here and now, once and for all, and rescue the world, which is sinking into death. His act of redemption remains in effect forever: consequently, it is essential even today, and even for us!
Likewise, our contemporary modern world only allows the rich and powerful to enjoy civic rights. Nevertheless, civic duties burden the rest mostly, especially if it comes to hard work or penalties imposed. The virus of corruption has infiltrated everywhere. The war lords are competing in killing the most innocent little children because they make huge profit out of it! We wonder what it might mean that 12% of our country's population has emigrated. Almost the same amount has no other option but to go to work abroad, far away from their beloved family, friends. Unfortunately, most of them are going to settle down abroad. Do you think that all this pain is indifferent to the Lord our God? Do you think that from his celestial box seat he is watching all the consequences of sin - sickness, tragedies, hatred, warfare - without any compassion?!
Our God the Creator sent his own son for us into the world to show his deep compassion for us. He offers solution to all the problems. He does not only teach it but he also lives it and proves the love of the Father for all men.
He who died and resurrected for our sake offers the opportunity of deliverance to everyone. Even today, those who accept him as the Redeemer, the Lord of their life, He is going to teach them, treat their illness, console them every time they cry, encourage them when they are weak, rescue them from their captivities. Until they reach perfect happiness, He helps them carry their crosses, helps His faithful disciples to conquer themselves because the old sinful self only cares about what its ego deserves, but from the Master it learns that it is only through serving others and making them joyful that the heart finds its happiness and peace, the true meaning of life.
With these thoughts, I wish all the faithful in our diocese a graceful Easter. May we meet the Redeemer in person and proceed on our way together with Him.

Day of Consecrated Life in the Diocese of Munkacs
On February 1st priests and religious of the Diocese of Munkacs celebrated the Day of Consecrated Life in Schonborn, near Munkacs. Bishop Antal Majnek invited Fülöp Kocsis, Greek Catholic Bishop of Hungary, to give the homily. As Bishop Kocsis said: recreation and the source of strength for those touched by God's love is a retreat in private with God, who would like to spend some time with His people after they have been busy with all their duties. "We do so much, we try to help so many people - he said - that sometimes we forget about this invitation. It should not be a special event but rather a part of our everyday life."
After that, together with the two religious bishops, the participants renewed their religious vows. Following the Holy Mass, Bishop Fülöp Kocsis shared a retreat message with the religious community. He contemplated on St. Paul's thoughts - according to 1 Corinthians - regarding the fidelity to one's own vocation to religious or consecrated life. A person dedicated to God should safeguard the purity of their heart for the Bridegroom and protect it against the many temptations of today's world. Humbleness and slef-abnegation is essential to achieve that: "So, people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don't fall."
Haiti CollectionDrive in Subcarpathia
Bishop Antal Majnek announced a collection drive on January 18th in the Diocese of Munkacs to benefit the earthquake survivors in Haiti. The Bishop's circular letter was read in the churches of the diocese on January 24th.
Mieczysław Mokrzycki Archbishop of Lviv in his circular letter appealed to all the dioceses in Ukraine on January 23rd to organize collection drives for the victims of the Haitian earthquake and send the donations to the Caritas Spes in Kiev as soon as possible.

A SHORT HISTORICAL REVIEW
Chronologia historica
From the beginning till nowadays
We can speak about the history, the life and the formation of the Mukachevo Diocese authentically if we also mention the events which
preceded its foundation. Its history can be divided into four large periods:
1. The times preceding the formation of the Satmar Episcopate
2. The time of the Satmar Episcopate
3. The period following World War I
4. The events which happened during the existence of the Soviet Union and after its fall till nowadays
*
The times preceding the formation of the Satmar Episcopate
As far as we know the Hungarians (and the people who joined them), who came to the Carpathian basin, got in touch with different religions.
But still they had preserved their turk cult of God, the fostering of which was first of all the responsibility of the sacred prince kende.
The Hungarian grand dukes were ready to adopt christianity in the 950-960-s. But the question of their joining the eastern or the western
christianity was finally solved by the state of political affairs.
The real organizer of the Hungarian church Anastaz-Astrik first was the archbishop of Kalocha, later of Estergom. He also organized the
Hungarian catholic church locally on behalf of the pope and king St. Ishtvan. Each of the seven organized dioceses embraced vast territories.
So did the episcopate of Transylvania, set up in 1009, to which the carpathian territory belonged till the beginning of the 14-th century.
There are little data (prooved by written sources) about the life of christianity in the 11-th century. It is known that among the churches
of Romanesque style in Transcarpathia the Uzhhorod-Gereny rotunda is of great importance. It is one of our most intact (unhurt) rotundas. There were more functioning parishes as well, for instance in Bobove, Dejda, Kigyosh, Janoshi, Velyka Bejhany, Syurte, Chornotysiv, Vinohradovo and Ardiv.
Beginning from 1346 Transcarpathia became the part of Eger Diocese.
Since that time churches were built in many places, not only in towns or cities. According to the memorandum which remained at the Vatican archives there are more than 50 churches in our area.
*
The times of the Satmar Episcopate
The independent Satmar Catholic Episcopate was founded on 23rd March, 1804. On 9th August in the same year pope Pius VII. has legalized it. Besides Satmar county the new Episcopate included Maramarosh, Ugocha and Ung counties as well. The spiritual development of the diocese was determined not only by the history, but also by the things which the bishops believed to be important and which made the believers happy. By the end of the World War I the diocese was directed by the following bishops:
1. Ishtvan Fischer (1804-1807) paid particular attention to the organization of education. He set up an episcopal liceum, catholic high school and a theological college.
2. Peter Klobusiczky (1807-1821) dean-vicar of Ung divided the diocese into dean districts. He also encouraged the studying process in the country by establishing dormitories of high schools. Because of the great famine on this territory after the Napoleon wars his first task was the organization of the so-called "charitable centres and institutions".
3. Floriant Kovach's (1821-1825) poor health prevented him from the active apostolic work.
4. Janosh Ham (1827-1857) has governed the episcopate for 30 years. We can justly confirm that he has framed its aspect. His apostolic work and guiding played an important role in the life of the whole territory.
5. In the times of Mihaly Haash (1858-1866) the jesuit monks came back to their old monastic quarters. He also paid great attention to education. He published newspapers, books, started pedagogical courses. He set up orphanages and houses intended for taking care of sick people.
6. Laslo Biro (1866-1872) was the colleague of Janosh Ham, that's why it's clear that he also paid attention to the poor, elderly people, as well as to the studying youth.
7. Dr. Lerinc Schlauch (1873-1877) has set up clerical libraries at each parish. He installed and controlled school teaching in every Transcarpathian village.
8. Gyula Meslenyi (1877-1905) worked on the development of the world institutions. His cultural activity is also considerable.
The change of the political boundaries in the times of Dr. Tibor Boromissa (1906-1928) caused some difficulties in the governing of the diocese. His social and charitable activities were the most considerable.

The period following World War I
The period under the ruling of Dr. Tibor Boromissa bishop till World War I was rich in the establishment of new institutions and in steps towards the upturn of religious life. This was the period of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and the Trianon dictate of peace following it together with the dismemberment of the diocese. In this new situation the bishop tried to improve the relations between the diocese and the Romanian state. His legal authority had spread to the parish churches lying on the territory of Czechoslovakia. In such a way he set up the Apostolic Governorship of Uzhhorod. It is interesting that in spite of the frontier he ruled both the Hungarian and the Transcarpathian territories almost smoothly. During the period of his ruling the Canon Law Codex of 1917 came into force. He collated the partial diocesan creation of law with the new codification of canon law, and modified it according to the new codex. Dr. Janosh Scheffler, the public prosecutor of Vatican and teacher of canon law helped him a lot in this work. In 1926 bishop Boromissa also compiled the Fundamental Rule of the Satmar Diocese. After long sufferings he died on 9-th July, 1928, and chose Ishtvan Sabo as chapter vicar.
Meanwhile on 7-th July, 1929 Vatican signed the concord with Romania, which contained a lot of derogatory parts with respect to the Hungarian catholic church of Transylvania. Beginning with this day the legal authority of the Satmar vicar over the hungarian part of the diocese which he ruled from 1-st October, 1923 with the help of the foreign vicar came to an end. At the same time the Satmar diocese lost its authority over the Carpathian part which belonged to Czechoslovakia and was ruled by the foreign vicar Dr. Abrish Tahy since 8 March, 1923. Irrespective of the frontier's settlement the Church carried the Satmar legal practice on. In 1930 an apostolic regency with the centre in Uzhhorod was established from the Carpathian part under Ferenc Svoboda's direction.
According to the first Viennese decision (2nd November, 1938) beginning from autumn, 1938 there began a rapid organization of the ecclesiastical administration of the highland territories which went back to Hungary. Vatican united the parishes of the Satmar Diocese which got back from Transcarpathia to Hungary with the Merk Apostolic Governorship lying on the Hungarian territory. According to the bull published on 19-th July, 1939 it was placed under the legal authority of Ishtvan Madaras, bishop of Koshice. But very soon some further changes of the border took place. According to the second Viennese decision (30 August, 1940) most part of Partium and North-Transylvania went back to the motherland. On 23-rd July, 1940 (before the second Viennese decision) Vatican appointed P. Napholcz Pal SJ monk to be the bishop of satmar-nagyvarad region. The appointed bishop in this new situation offered his resignation to Vatican, which was accepted. The governing of the dioceses was entrusted to Aron Marton.
On 17-th May, 1942 Dr. Janosh Scheffler took over the ruling of the Satmar Diocese together with Transcarpathia as a bishop and the Nagyvarad Diocese - as an apostolic governor. As a result of the second viennese decision the two ecclesiastical territories integrated into the Hungarian church organization. Transcarpathia joined the Satmar Episcopate again. The bishop considered his main task to adjust the partial law formation of his diocese to the local law formation of the Hungarian church. He became both the bishop and the consoler for his believers. He carried out his diocesan visits on the detached territories by himself.
At the time of the war which swept through the territory of the whole governorship the bishop felt it his duty to strengthen his priests and believers by his personal presence as well. He visited Transcarpathia several times, but before the end of the war he visited the territory which was under his authority for the last time. According to the direction from Rome he marked his "tasks" everywhere. In such a way, in Transcarpathia he appointed the next general vicar, in case there would be some difficulties in the relations with the bishop or the vicar would be arrested.

The events which happened during the existence of the Soviet Union and after its fall till nowadays
After the collapse in 1944 bishop Scheffler named Ferenc Pastor, the principal dean of Berehovo as the episcopal vicar of Transcapathia, since the church governing of Transcarpathia from the episcopal seat became practically impossible. He named another two vicars as well, who would rule the diocese in case of possible hindrance. As it is known from the older priests, one of them was Dr. Bujalo Bernat, the other - Jeno Segedi. According to the peace-treaty signed on 10-th February, 1947 the Satmar diocese was divided into four parts. There remained 13 parishes in Czechoslovakia, 27 - in Hungary, 40 - in Transcarpathia and 55 - in Romania.
The soviet terror hadn't avoided the roman catholic church as well; its priests were usually convicted of treason and incitement to disaffection. It was extremely difficult to rule the church in such a dangerous situation. At the times when people's faith and strength were tested every priest was carrying out his duties in the spirit of Jesus Christ's teaching. Although the registration of births, marriages and deaths was officially forbidden, our priests still did it in secret. Only the rituals of mass and funerals were allowed, but it was forbidden to admit seminarists. A lot of books were published on this difficult period in Hungary and Transcarpathia as well.
At the times when the terror had eased and more priests came back from the concentration camps, the State Church Office tried to take over the tasks of the church. They managed to make approaches to one or two priests, who tried to rule the Transcarpathian church with the help of the power given to them by the state authorities. In 1956 the state organs arbitrarily named Janosh Mesarosh and later dr. Zavodnyik Tibor parish priests of Uzhhorod as vicars. In 1956 the priests who were carried off came back from camps. The principal dean Bernat Bujalo returned home as well. He took over the governing, but soon he resigned because of his state of health. The assigned successor Jeno Segedi, the parish priest of Palanok, didn't get any state assent and wasn't allowed to rule. But in secret his word was decisive in the roman catholic church till his death at the age of 86.
After Dr. Zavodnyik Tibor's death in 1985, Joseph Galambosh, the parish priest of Hust, was chosen as a vicar by the priests. He died in December the same year. Joseph Chati became the next vicar of Transcarpathia. At the times of communism the State Office of Church affairs regulated and controlled all the activities of the church. It wasn't allowed to appoint any priest to another place without the state's approval. The vicars couldn't publish a decree general and valid for every church because of the political oppression. The religious education of the children was punished most heavily. Despite his old age vicar Joseph Chati tried to unite the priests who lived here. He took every opportunity to organize meetings of priests. He reported his directions mainly orally. In these directions he spoke about the importance of prayer, religion teaching and apostolic activity. In spring 1989 when the cardinal of Estergom Dr. Laslo Pashkai visited Transcarpathia there began a decisive positive change in the life of the Transcarpathian roman catholic church. After this visit the leaders of Soviet Union allowed the service of Hungarian priests on this territory. On 1st November, 1990 there arrived monks from Czechoslovakia as well.
On 28th March, 1992 the Holy See named archbishop Antonio Franco, the apostolic nuncio of Ukraine, as the vicar of the Transcarpathian roman catholic church. He arrived in Transcarpathia, Mukachevo on 13th August the same year and strengthened Father Chati in his position as a general vicar.
In March, 1993 after Joseph Chati's death, archbishop Antonio Franco, having heard the opinion of the guest priests working here, named the parish priest of Solotvino Lajosh Hudra as his general vicar. He also appointed clerical councils and respectively vicars according to the language area. 26 June, 1993 was a joyful data, because on this day again after 46 years of pause a home priest Shandor Pap was ordained in Transcarpathia.
On 14 th August, 1993 according to the decision of the Holy See the Transcarpathian Apostolic Governorship was established. Archbishop Antonio Franco, the apostolic nuncio of Ukraine, became the first apostolic governor. On 16th December the papal bull about the formation of the Transcarpathian Apostolic Governorship was announced in the roman catholic church of Mukachevo. It was difficult for the nuncio to rule the new church because of the distance. At Christmas and Easter he always met his local priests in Transcarpathia, otherwise he conducted the matters of the church with the help of the general and episcopal vicar Lajosh Hudra.
On 9th December, 1995 pope John Pal II named the head of the Franciscan Mission in Vinohradovo Antal Majnek as the assistant bishop of the Transcarpathian Apostolic Governorship. He became the general vicar after Father Lajosh Hudra's death on 17th December, 1995. The ceremony of confering a mitre upon Antal Majnek took place in Rome on 6th January, 1996. It was carried out by pope John Pal II. The nuncio gave the new general vicar a free hand to rule the church except of ordaining and placing priests. On 7th October, 1997, half a year later the Pope named Antal Majnek as the bishop of the Transcarpathian Apostolic Governorship.
The diocesan life was making great strides further. Since 1998 priests are continuously ordained in the church of Mukachevo every year. The great 2000 anniversary year was celebrated by the Transcarpathian diocese with great solemnity. The principal celebration took place on the day of bishop St. Martin, the patron saint of the Apostolic Governorship. On this significant occasion archbishop Nicola Eterovic', the apostolic nuncio of Ukraine, Marian Jaworski metropolitan archbishop of Lviv, Pal Reizer roman catholic diocesan bishop of Satmar and Janosh Semedi greek catholic diocesan bishop of Mukachevo were present. The central celebration of the Hungarian millenium took place on 20th August, on king St. Stephen's day in Solotvino. Here the bishop blessed a group of statues consisting of the statues of Hungarian saints.
Since then more churches were consecrated by bishop Antal Majnek, among others in Klyucharky, Zabrigy, Chetfalva, Velike Muzhijevo, Uzhhorod-Bozdosh and Uzhhorod-Radvanka.
The latest great occasion of the Transcarpathian diocese took place in Vatican on 27th March, 2002 on Holy Wednesday, when pope John Pal II gave the Transcarpathian Roman Catholic Apostolic Governorship the diocesan status. In such a way he established the Mukachevo Diocese for the roman catholic believers. He named Antal Majnek as its first diocesan bishop. On 27th 2002 the Mukachevo Diocese was announced with solemnity. On this day the installation of Antal Majnek, the first diocesan bishop of the new diocese, in his office took place as well. It was carried out by the cardinal archbishop of Lviv Marian Jaworski, the apostolic nuncio of Ukraine Nicola Eterović, the Ukrainian episcopal department in the presence of the diocesan priests and believers of Mukachevo.

The Cathedral of Tours Saint Martin
Mukachevo, which is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese, is divided by the river Latorica into two parts. The roman catholic church was built in the 14-th century. It was consecrated in honour of St. Marton. Probably the church had already existed at the time when queen Elizabeth, in her letter written in Berehovo (1376), allowed Mukachevo to engrave the picture of St. Marton on its seal. Queen Elizabeth often prayed here.
In the 1370s the church was reconstructed. Later, in the age of Hunyadies, it was renovated. During the period of reformation many citizens of Mukachevo accepted the new faith and took possession of the church. In 1660 Zhofia Bathory gave the church, the vicarage and the school back to the catholics.
In 1686 while Ilona Zrinyi was defending her castle, Caprara, the head of the imperial army, burnt down the town as well as the church. By 1725 the catholics had by and large set the building destroyed by the fire to order. In 1746 great transformations were carried out. In 1800 an altar was built for the church by order of the count Ervin Shenborn. The present altar-piece is also his merit. It portrays St. Marton on horseback as he is handing the half of his gown to a beggar. Later Marton finds out that it wasn't really a beggar, but the Christ himself. The picture was painted in Vienna.
By the end of the 19-th century the nave was brought to such a condition that it had to be pulled down. Only the sanctuary, which was reconstructed into a chapel, remained from the old church. In 1896 on count Shenborn's initiative the construction of the new church was put forward. The count's family made a considerable contribution to its building providing half of the sum. The new church was built in 1905 by Marton Wagner, a master builder from Jasapat. He built it on the basis of Gyozo Czigler's plans in a different, eclectic style. The basement walls of the new church were blessed on 7 August,1904. The newly built church was consecrated with great solemnity on 24 September,1905. After 1945 the church was in need of renovation, but the permission for this was obtained only in 1967. The embellishment and the partial restoration of the cathedral is going on today. A new fence was built in place of the demolished one and the chapel was renovated. The picture of St. Marton which is placed at the high altar was also successfuly restored. In 2004 the diocese again started an outside renovation of the cathedral on the ossasion of the centenary of its erection. Unfortunately this work is not finished yet.
On 27 March, 2002 the church became the cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Mukachevo. Its organ was built in 1913 by the Rieger Brothers from Budapest. At the entrance of the church one can see the altar-piece of the demolished church of Zhofiafalva, which is Viktor Madaras's painting. The picture portrays king St. Ishtvan as he is offering the crown to Virgin Mary and through her to God who takes care of us.
Antal Majnek - diocesan bishop of Mukachevo
Antal Majnek was born on 18 November, 1951 in Budapest. This order was founded by Assisi St. Ferenc. He studied theology at the theological seminary in Estergom and Budapest. On 15 September, 1981 he took a monastic eternal oath. In July, 1989 ater the change of regime Antal Majnek came to Transcarpathia together with his two franciscan fellow workers to serve the Hungarian believers. On 9 December, 1995 pope Janosh Pal II named Antal Majnek as a febian titular bishop, and the Trancarpathian Apostolic Governorship named him as an assistant bishop. Beginning from 17 December he became the vicar-general. The ceremony of confering a mitre upon Antal Majnek took place on 6 January, 1996 in Rome, which was carried out by the pope Janosh Pal II. From that time onward he was fulfilling his duties as the Transcarpathian assistant bishop of the Kyiv nuncio Antonio Franco. On 7 October, 1997 the pope Janosh Pal II named Antal Majnek as the diocesan bishop of the Transcarpathian Apostolic Governorship.
